The 50th New York City Pride March didn’t happen last June due to COVID. Due to health concerns, a very special half-century celebration of the long, ongoing climb toward equal rights for gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgender people had to be replaced with a symbolic virtual event.
The 51st march, this Sunday, is likewise mostly virtual, but far worse, it also carries the taint of exclusion, because organizers have banned the participation of LGBTQ people who happen to be cops. Male, female and non-binary New Yorkers who carry the rainbow flag aren’t welcome if they also wear the NYPD blue, say the organizers, and the same will go for next year, when the real march is back to the real streets.
